Mission Statement:

We are a dedicated group of students committed to empowering our community by providing solar-powered portable chargers to the unhoused in Wake County, North Carolina. Through innovation, compassion, and action, we strive to bridge the digital divide and ensure that everyone has access to the power they need to stay connected to community services and medical care.

Our Story:

WakeCharge was founded in loving memory of our family member, Paul Michael Hughes, whose life was marked by both struggle and strength. Paul faced the challenges of mental health disorders, addiction, and periods of homelessness with resilience and heart. Despite these hardships, he remained a source of light and love in our lives.

On May 21st, 2025, Paul passed away — but his story didn’t end there. Inspired by his journey, we formed WakeCharge as a student-led nonprofit with a mission to honor his legacy by helping others facing similar battles.

Through our work, we aim not only to provide access to power, but also to spark hope, raise awareness, and promote dignity for those who often feel forgotten. Paul’s life continues to guide us — and his memory powers our purpose.
